November 2017 – Meet Leah Case!

gym admin Leave a Comment

We have so much love for our community, and want to take the chance to highlight one athlete each month that exemplifies hard work – if you haven’t met Leah yet (or even if you have), make sure to give her a high five and a smile next time you see her at the gym!

Here is a little about Leah’s journey through CrossFit so far:
I’ve been doing CrossFit for just over a year! I came to CrossFit about a year after having my 3rd baby. I have always been very self-motivated working out at home or alone in the gym, but after Quinn was born I lost my joy in my workouts. It felt like a chore, I never wanted to push myself, and I simply didn’t want to go…which also meant I stopped seeing results. I love exercise, and I love how it makes me feel the rest of the day, especially as a mom of 3 young kids, so I knew I needed a change to find that fire again. After a lot of hesitation, I thought I’d give CrossFit a try. My friend Liz recommended Terminus, so I came for an intro class and I was hooked! What really drew me in was the sense of community – after working out by myself for so many years, and spending my days with kids, having people around me every morning with similar goals gives me a great sense of joy and excitement to get there every morning.

Q: Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Detroit, but I consider Atlanta home – we moved here when I was 13.

Q: What class do you attend?
6 am….the best class, of course.

Q: Do you have a favorite workout or movement? Least favorite?
Favorite: assault bike or rowing….but only because those are the 2 movements I can win at. 😉 (one of the only perks of being tall in CrossFit….)
Least favorite: running….duh. Sometimes I want to turn around and drive home when I see the 5am class coming in from running, but I haven’t done that….yet.

Q: What’s your favorite hobby, pastime or interest outside of work (other than CrossFit)?
Entertaining! We have people over quite often and love opening our home to friends and neighbors and sharing a meal. Sharing a meal with people creates such a sense of friendship and community and I love getting to dig deep with people at the dinner table! Let me know if you ever want to come over, the door is always open.

Q: Favorite music to work out to or just listen to in general?
During workouts it’s embarrassingly Backstreet Boys, bwahaha! It has the perfect beat to keep up a good pace. Don’t hate. In real life I like to listen to worship music!

Q: What is something that we may not know about you?
I went to college for classical oboe performance….and I haven’t played since.

Q: Favorite Atlanta Restaurant?
Why is this the hardest question so far? I’m going to go with…Goin’ Coastal

Q: Favorite moment at CF Terminus?
Finishing the 5k! The day I started, I couldn’t even run a mile. I was so proud of myself for finishing a 5k AND coming in 6 minutes under what I expected.

Q: How has CrossFit affected your life (inside/outside of the gym)?
CrossFit has brought back my passion for fitness and has opened up a community of people to me that I never expected – it truly brightens my day to see my 6am people and I look forward to it. I am also the fittest I have ever been in my life!

Q: Any advice for someone considering trying CrossFit for the first time?
Put aside your preconceived notions and fears and just TRY IT. Come in with an open mind and a positive attitude and you will be surprised at yourself daily!

Thank you, Leah, for being such an incredible addition to our community – you inspire those around you with your sunny disposition and can-do attitude. We especially love that you are a mom that proves that setting time aside to take care of yourself is a choice, and time well-invested!

Athlete Spotlight – Bon Voyage, Graham!

gym admin Leave a Comment
Graham has been a member at Terminus for over two years. He is leaving us to move to Haiti to work with his family’s orphanage (Disciples’ Village).
He has been very involved in our community – especially in the evening classes.
He is goofy and keeps everyone laughing. He is supportive and always cheering athletes on until the very last second. And he is ALWAYS down for a sweaty post-WOD hug!
We have loved watching you grow as an athlete and help build our community. We are sad to see you go, but proud of you for going out to spread some love in the world!

Q: Where are you originally from?
-Lexington, SC

Q: What class do you attend?
-5:30/6:30pm

Q: Do you have a favorite workout or movement?
-Pull-ups and Fran
Least favorite?
-Deadlifts and DT

Q: What’s your favorite hobby, pastime or interest outside of work (other than CrossFit)?
-Soccer! I’ve played since I was 6 years old.

Q: Favorite music to work out to or just listen to in general?
-Any of Chase’s playlists.

Q: Favorite Atlanta Restaurant?
-Venkman’s (or any place with large portions)

Q: Favorite moment at CF Terminus?
-The open. I love seeing our community come together to cheer and push each other on. I love seeing first time muscle ups, people decked out in their team color, and even the frustration when people don’t do as well as they want to. It’s a special time of year where our community comes together and this year had the added bonus of raising money for great causes as well!

Q: How has CrossFit affected your life (inside/outside of the gym)?
-CrossFit has kept me engaged physically and pushed me mentally. It challenges me to push the limits of what I think I am capable of. It gives me confidence that starts in the gym, and then runs over into the rest of my life.

Q: What do you love most about CF Terminus?
-By far the community. I’ve moved to two new cities now, and at both cities my closest friends came from my CrossFit gym. There is just something special about suffering together and supporting each other in the midst of it.

Q: Any advice for someone considering trying CrossFit for the first time?
-Give it time. It will be frustrating, and it will hurt, but you have to give it and yourself time. If you come in consistently and give each workout everything you have you will see results. You will see changes physically and mentally, and before you know it will be doing things you never thought you’d be able to.

October 2017 – Meet Katy Appleby!

gym admin Leave a Comment

We have so much love for our community, and want to take the chance to highlight one athlete each month that exemplifies hard work – if you haven’t met Katy yet (or even if you have), make sure to give her a sweaty high five or I’m-a-star jump salute and a smile next time you see her at the gym!

Here is a little about Katy’s journey through CrossFit so far:

“Crossfit and I just celebrated our 4 year anniversary. We started going steady in Cleveland, OH. When I moved to Cleveland, similarly to Atlanta, I didn’t know anyone and I had moved there for law school. So I wanted to make some friends, pick up moderately heavy objects, and not spend ALL my time with other law students – CrossFit and I were a match made in heaven.”

Q: Where are you originally from?
I’m originally from just outside of Denver, CO but I also claim Seattle and Cleveland as places I’m from.

Q: Do you have a favorite workout or movement? Least favorite?
I love the Olympic lifts, kettlebell swings, and HSPUs. I’m generally whiny regarding all things cardio, especially running. Also generally not gymnasty.

Q: What’s your favorite hobby, pastime or interest outside of work (other than CrossFit)?
I generally enjoy brunch,

Q: Favorite music to work out to or just listen to in general?
My preferred fitness genres are power pop and “white girl trap” aka only songs that I know all the words to and can sing along to while trying not to die on the assault bike. In general I am pretty equal opportunity music.

Q: What is something that we may not know about you?
I have incredibly small hands, and I have spectated several Worlds Strongest Man competitions.

Q: Favorite Atlanta Restaurant?
Princi Italia – but I still feel pretty new here, so I’m always looking for new suggestions.

Q: Why on Earth do you go to the 5am class?!?
Well, if I don’t do it at 5AM, I don’t do it at all. But I love the 5AM crew. So I started at 5AM for my schedule but I stay for the people.

Q: Favorite moment at CF Terminus?
Hmmmmm…. I have too many to count even just in this short time, but I think probably post Memorial Day Murph hanging out with everyone and trying to #liveultra.

Q: Any advice for someone considering trying CrossFit for the first time?
I think my best advice would be to just keep showing up and having a good attitude. You won’t be great right away. The movements get easier, you get better, and if you’re lucky, like me, you’ll find a community that makes you continue to show up at wee hours of the morning who make not sleeping in totally worth it.

Thank you, Katy for always bringing a great vibe (and even greater dance moves) – whether it be 5:00am, 5:30pm, or on Saturday morning. We love your energy and you have become a wonderful addition to our CrossFit Terminus family!

September 2017 – Meet Dan Burer!

gym admin Leave a Comment

We have so much love for our community, and want to take the chance to highlight one athlete each month that exemplifies hard work – if you haven’t met Dan yet (or even if you have), make sure to give him a high five and a smile next time you see him at the gym!

Dan is a happy guy – every time he walks in the gym, he has a smile on his face. He constantly brings a positive attitude (even on bike/burpee days) and his jolly outlook on life is something we should all strive for! If you didn’t know, Dan LOVES partner workouts!

We asked Dan a few questions so that we can all get to know him a little better:

Here is a little about Dan’s journey through CrossFit so far:

“A few years ago, I had a friend who started CrossFit and it changed his life. He was fitter than he had ever been in his life, and became a CrossFit fanatic. I was intimidated – the training seemed so elite/aggressive – but I took the step to go visit a gym in Savannah. They were a great and supportive group that helped me learn the ropes and develop the core competencies. Since then, the best part of my day is getting to the gym.”

Q: Where are you originally from?

I grew up outside of Athens, GA in Oconee County. I haven’t travelled far – have lived and worked in metro Atlanta mostly since I left UGA. I spent three years in Savannah due to a job transfer.

Q: What class do you attend?

4:30P is the one and only. Work, life, commutes, etc. make it the only option for me.

Q: Do you have a favorite workout or movement? Least favorite?

I like when we do a variety of “functional movements”, like throwing the sand bags, farmer’s carry, or box jumps. With the bar, overhead squat is my favorite. Partner WODs are extra fun. On the other end, my running needs improvement and I struggle with pull-ups.

Q: What’s your favorite hobby, pastime or interest outside of work (other than CrossFit)?

I love to backpack, but only get to do that a few times a year. I mountain bike once or twice a month. I am a decent electric guitarist.

Q: Favorite music to work out to or just listen to in general?

I would put Warren Haynes as the best all-around modern guitarist. I don’t listen to radio, just use Spotify and let it take me to undiscovered places. Here are a few songs in my deck recently, take a listen:

  • “It Only Hurts” by Default
  • “Sovereign Over Us” by Aaron Keyes
  • “Before Tomorrow Comes” by Alter Bridge

Q: What is something that we may not know about you?

I am a middle manager for a Fortune 500 company (sound exciting?). I have four kids, three of which are in college. My brother runs a tree farm in Hawaii.

Q: Favorite Atlanta Restaurant?

Probably my favorite meals are prepared at home on the grill. That is an area I have skills.

Q: Favorite moment at CF Terminus?

When Marshall says we’re “gonna get jacked” and the rare moments I get to return the favor and yell at Chase.

Q: Any advice for someone considering trying CrossFit for the first time?

A good gym should cater to all fitness and skill levels. Scaling options are endless, so you can start from anywhere. Come visit and ask questions. Be honest and humble about where you are but also be excited about where you will be able to go.

Thank you Dan for your contagious smile and for coming to the gym ready to work hard EVERYDAY!

August 2017 – Meet Joe Fletcher!

gym admin Leave a Comment

We have so much love for our community, and want to take the chance to highlight one athlete each month that exemplifies hard work – if you haven’t met Joe yet (or even if you have), make sure to give him a high five and a smile next time you see him at the gym!

Here is a little about Joe’s journey through CrossFit so far:

“I have always been what I describe as “hyper-competitive” in everything I do. I played sports my whole life, and desperately needed an outlet once I stopped wrestling in college. It took about 4 years, but eventually I found CrossFit. I felt at home with the group training and competitive atmosphere that I had always loved so much about team sports.

About 6 months into CrossFit, I did my first local competition and was hooked. My focus in CrossFit competitions is not necessarily where I place – I get the most out of way that it allows me to have a different mindset. Being involved in competitive CrossFit on the local level has helped me to recognize the importance of seeing each day in the gym as an opportunity to improve as an athlete as opposed to worrying about the score on the board. It is extremely draining both mentally and physically to push for every last rep and second on the clock. I absolutely love pushing myself that hard in competition, but to be able to remain active long term, I have to be able to recognize what will help long term health and growth vs. posting the highest score on the whiteboard. Training has be fun in order for it be a positive addition to your life and I know that for my own personal journey, I am happiest in my day-to-day training without the wear and tear on my body and mind that a competitive mindset brings.”

We asked Joe a few other questions to get to know him better – they are answered below in his own words:

Q: Do you have a favorite workout or movement? Least favorite?
Favorite – anything odd object (tires, logs, sandbags, sleds) or just grunt work.
Least Favorite – I don’t think I will ever get to the point were I enjoy burpees

Q: What’s your favorite hobby, pastime or interest outside of work (other than CrossFit)?
Any type of water related activity, boats, floats, swimming etc.

Q: Favorite music to work out to? Favorite music to relax to?  OR Favorite AtlantaRestaurant?
I don’t really listen to music other than when I workout and rarely if ever pick that, But I am a sucker for a good brunch and my favorite spot is Sun in my Belly.
Q: Any advice for someone considering trying CrossFit for the first time?
Get the first one out of the way quickly, the longer you think about it the more it will build up in your mind to be scarier than it is.
Thank you, Joe, for being a strong leader and positive spirit in our community!
