Ben and I sat down in 2013 when Terminus was merely a vision. We were given specific parameters from our business partner on what not to use: No skulls, no swords, no dogs, no kettlebells, no wings- something original!
While we were already affiliated under CrossFit Terminus, we needed an epic logo that represented the name. Ben and I were eating at Taqueria del Sol one afternoon, when we were looking at the dollar bill and noticed the Eye of Providence with beaming rays of light around the eye. Immediately, we knew we had direction.
The Eye of Providence or the all-seeing eye is a symbol of an eye surrounded by rays of light or glory, usually enclosed by a triangle. This can be interpreted as God keeping watch over humankind, and as Ben and I liked to think, “He had approved of our undertakings.” We also joked that Ben would be the all-seeing eye at Terminus, making sure every member upheld integrity and standards at all time.
The train tracks and gear portion of the logo embodies the history of ‘Terminus’, which dates back to 1837. When Georgia decided to build a railroad line from the Midwest down to modern day Atlanta, a stake was put into the ground just a few miles away from the gym, which became known as Terminus, literally meaning “End of the Line.” Contrary to popular belief, we did not take the name Terminus from the AMC show The Walking Dead, although it was a nice coincidence!
We originally went to one of Ben’s tattoo artist friends to take these ideas and turn them into a reality that would represent our business. Although we got a great start, we may have overloaded him with ideas. Eventually, we went with Terminus Founding member Kirsten Nantz to simply these thoughts into a concise logo, and she did exactly that.
Here’s the glimpse at the evolution…
